Across over a decade of releases on labels like Eglo and his own Apron Records, as well as club sets across the world, he has consistently balanced light and dark, soft and hard, yin and yang. From rough-edged house and techno, to mellow soul and boogie, to meditations on his family and musical heritage on his 2018 LP Bloodline, Julien’s music has always moved between moods, styles, and emotions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat same eclecticism also defines his forthcoming installment for !K7’s iconic DJ-Kicks mix series. Featuring a diverse range of artists including Ryuichi Sakamoto, DāM-FunK and Todd Edwards, alongside a selection of his own exclusive productions, Julien’s contribution to the series is a journey from day to night: guiding the listener from a bucolic afternoon in nature to the introspective vibe of home before going out, eventually culminating in the euphoric embrace of the dancefloor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat narrative flow from day-to-night, or from home-to-club, is a recurring theme in Julien’s music, and reflective in part of his deeper personality: reserved and quiet at first, but intense and passionate as he becomes better known. It also speaks to his broader life experiences, with the first half of his mix for DJ-Kicks operating as an extended love letter to his upbringing steeped in the history of UK dance music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat influence comes in part from his family. Their culture and identity continues to mark his music, from the aesthetic of his label and the fusion of modern and vintage sounds, to his broader approach to creativity: staying true to his artistic vision rather than being swayed by external pressures. His most recent EP Wraap’t is a perfect example. Inspired by his teenage years working in a barbershop, it takes classic R\u0026amp;B and new jack swing sounds, and marries them to more contemporary production details: a nostalgic tribute to his community and family ties to West London barbershops, skilfully brought into the present.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs the mix progresses, Julien’s more recent experiences as a club DJ emerge more strongly, bringing a new perspective to that same interplay between lightness and intensity. Julien describes his creative approach when making DJ sets—and this mix in particular—as going with his energy and intuition.
