It includes original productions by HAAi, DJ BORING, LNS, and her Australian-based friend Jennifer Loveless – whose track ‘in 10000 places (then what)’ overflows with trance euphoria – as well as appearances by Fred Again (collaborator on ‘Both of Us/Are You Down’), DJ Koze, and FIT Siegel.

Each selection, Guy explains, is tied to a memory: from the beginnings of her career in Vancouver's burgeoning electronic scene, her time DJing in Berlin, or reconnecting with friends from home. “I really wanted to involve friends with whom I’ve shared experiences. The people included are those I’ve traveled with, had all-night DJ sets with, or made music with. They’ve been so formative to my artistry.”

The result is that her DJ-Kicks album is an exercise in connection; a look at the past and the future, the good times and the bad. “This mix is full of nostalgia; music is nostalgia for me. It’s happy and sad at the same time,” she says. “A friend and I were looking at old pictures from when we threw underground parties in Vancouver and you get that sense of: ‘Wow, it’s changed. And there’s a sadness in that, but also something incredible. At least we can look back at those times and feel like, yes, we lived them.’”

Ultimately, that’s what hooks you about the mix. It’s a much-needed dose of enthusiasm, but one that also acknowledges the melancholy of our trying times. Listening to it evokes a sense of familiarity, like reliving memories on old dancefloors or reading encouraging messages from an old friend. A testament to positivity, a work that chooses joy. The message is simple: “I’m an optimist. I want people to think: ‘We’re listening to good music and better times are coming.’”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_515870d5-63ce-479a-a0d7-7e94c5d3ac63.jpg?v=1759347713
