A Better Land embraces warmer, more melodic, and subtle compositions, primarily written by guitarist Jim Mullen. With a relaxed and spacious approach, the album conveys a close and human message: to enjoy life’s simple pleasures while looking to the future with hope, though without losing caution. Musically, Auger incorporates acoustic guitars, country-rock-leaning melodies, and three-part vocal harmonies into his sound palette. Among the highlights are the groove-driven title track, “A Better Land”; the minimalist “Dawn of Another Day” (later sampled by Air and Black Milk, among others); while “Fill Your Head With Laughter” revives Auger’s signature Hammond-led sound, in a vein close to early Traffic.

The album features Brian Auger’s unmistakable sound on organ and electric piano, accompanied by Jim Mullen on guitar, Barry Dean on bass, and Robbie McIntosh on drums and percussion, with Auger, Mullen, and Dean also contributing to vocals. Mullen co-wrote seven of the album’s nine tracks, with additional contributions from Alan Gorrie (who would later join Average White Band). These songwriters can be especially proud of their work: Sarah Vaughan, Auger’s all-time favourite singer, recognised the quality of these compositions by performing three of them—“Trouble,” “On Thinking It Over,” and “Tomorrow City”—for her 1972 album A Time in My Life.

This new official Strut reissue has been curated by Greg Boraman of Impressive Collective in collaboration with Brian and Karma Auger. Fully remastered by Cosmic Audio, it is presented as a high-quality replica edition on a single LP.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_424d07bb-fb89-4720-acbc-08946d0cb4dd.jpg?v=1782436552
