To discover new things, it sometimes takes someone to open a door between the known and the unknown. Altin Gün (“Golden Day”) is the band holding that doorknob. And when the door opens, you can smell, feel, and hear a blend of sounds you may have already known separately, but never in this brilliant context that sounds completely new.

On their debut album On (Bongo Joe Records), the band showcases what happens when doors are opened between traditional Turkish songs passed down through generations, on the one hand, and a raw blend of funk rhythms, wah-wah guitars, and analog organs, on the other. The Amsterdam-based musicians, hailing from diverse backgrounds (Turkish, but also Indonesian and Dutch), naturally create within that adventurous, borderless territory existing between both worlds.

Previous generations of Turkish musicians also experimented with opening doors between previously unconnected sound universes. During the 1970s, artists like Barış Manço, Selda Bağcan, and Erkin Koray developed a songwriting approach similar to Altin Gün's. They started from the music played at celebrations and ceremonies of their childhood: folk songs accompanied by the saz, a traditional Turkish string instrument. To this, they added the techniques and sensibilities of their era, resulting in a distinctive Turkish sound that flourished between 1972 and 1977 and that even today still sounds rich, danceable, and—why not say it—deeply mind-expanding.

The members of Altin Gün discovered this music in different ways: through their upbringing, through friendships, or by finding revealing compilations in record stores. These personal discoveries eventually led them to collectively open doors to audiences across Europe: from the Into the Great Wide Open festival in the Netherlands to Istanbul, from Ghent to Geneva, and from Ravenna back to Amsterdam; people across the continent fell in love with Altin Gün's unusual combination of familiar sounds.

Manço, Bağcan, and Koray have influenced Altin Gün, but their main inspiration is Neşet Ertaş, a Turkish folk musician whose musical legacy is invaluable. Comparisons are difficult, but imagine a figure with an impact and status comparable to Bob Dylan or George Gershwin, and you'll be close. Many of the songs he wrote became standards in Turkey, authentic national treasures that are still cherished today. Altin Gün preserves the lyrical and thematic structure of Ertaş's compositions, although they often modify their meters and add saturated bass lines, blistering organs, and raw saz riffs. Ertaş wrote most of the songs on the album, although after Altin Gün's reinterpretation work, many are barely recognizable.

The songs address universal themes such as love, death, desire, and destiny. It is moving music that simultaneously invites movement and caresses the soul. Music that sounds familiar but different. Deeply emotional music even for those who don't understand a single word of Turkish.

Let Altin Gün open that door for you and get ready to immerse yourself in their fresh and beautiful sound.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_2351abb5-a6b8-4804-88b5-72a25b44fbed.jpg?v=1782250431
