There was no denying it: the more I delved into the world of these illicit productions, the more intrigued I became; and it wasn’t long before it became clear to me that I would one day release my own compilation based on pirata compilations. But beyond my personal fascination with that parallel world, it was undeniable that the "pirata" movement had played a significant role in shaping the music scene in Mexico. So, how did it all begin?

During the 1980s, a group of music vendors and record collectors from Mexico City joined forces to create a series of illegally manufactured vinyls that contained rare and highly sought-after hits from Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and beyond. At that time, Mexico City's dance party scene was dominated by sonideros—a highly developed network of mobile sound system operators. The sonideros' popularity generated a growing demand for tropical music, as their fanbase increasingly craved the "exclusive" hits associated with particular sounds. Additionally, record vendors were frustrated with the music industry, which consistently "fed" them with streams of mediocre records, and from that frustration came the idea of compiling and manufacturing LPs where every song was a hit—"wherever the needle dropped, it had to be a song capable of lighting up the party."

These pirata compilations—known as “pirata”—were pressed during night shifts on recycled vinyl in editions of no more than 500 copies; they were cheaply produced and sold just as cheaply to people who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford them. They were extensively listened to in every corner of Mexico's densely populated neighborhoods, where, in addition to educating the ears of young people, they also promoted some of the best tropical music recorded in Latin America.

According to several first-hand accounts, these pirata records began mysteriously appearing in the early 80s at various market stalls in Tepito, Mexico City’s infamous barrio—a place where one can attend daytime salsa parties, score every drug imaginable, buy all sorts of weapons, and, of course, acquire pirata music in every format. It seems that the manufacturers of pirata LPs operated under the principle that “what happens in Tepito stays in Tepito,” and getting information about their counterfeiting operations was difficult and, moreover, dangerous. My accomplice—Carlos “Tropicaza” Icaza, who agreed to write the liner notes for this project—was quick to point out that: “We won’t be able to reveal any names. We’ll have to be careful when telling the story.”

At first, pirata LPs came in simple generic sleeves, bore fictitious company names such as Discos Music-Hall, Carioca, Garden, or Miami, and contained popular street dancing songs in nearly every tropical genre. As these unlikely compilations proved successful and new ones began to be produced at a rate of one per month, the piratas started to design and print interesting sleeves that often included the logos of some of the most popular sound systems, like Rolas, Pancho, La Changa, Arco-Iris, and Casablanca. The pioneer of this design style was Jaime Ruelas, who started as a DJ for the legendary mobile disco Polymarchs before using his illustration skills to design their flyers, posters, and logos. Drawing direct inspiration from sci-fi movies and heavy metal album covers, the graphics he created became a key element of sonidero culture.

The anonymous manufacturers may not have realized it at the time, but by daring to create pirata LPs, they were helping to consolidate and expand the love for tropical music and dancing among the population of Mexico City and beyond. The records themselves are a key element of sonidero culture, which was recently declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mexico City for the impact it has had on multiple generations who identified with the communal experience of the street party and for whom music and dancing became an essential part of daily life.

This double LP contains 23 floor-filling tropical tracks, selected from the best and weirdest pirata records produced during the golden age of Mexico City's mobile sound systems. Does Geoff Bastow have the greatest album title of all time? It’s definitely up there. It’s also one of the hardest to find library funk records out there. But don’t let the eye-catching name fool you; this is serious business.

As a key member of Giorgio Moroder’s team, the legendary Geoff Bastow needs no introduction. You surely know his singular genius as the mastermind behind the heavily-sampled boogie / disco classics "You Don’t Like My Music (Hupendi Muziki Wangu?!)" and "Don’t Stop," released with his group, K.I.D.

However, 1975’s Music To Varnish Owls By is where it all began for our hero.

It’s full of incredibly soulful, laidback music that, despite having been used a few times by Knxwledge, remains largely uncharted territory. So, beatmakers, it’s time to get to work! Rather than dropping that £300 on the ultra-rare original, invest in something else.

Born in 1949, Bastow was an English composer and producer based in Munich. He originally worked as a guitarist and pianist in dance bands in his native Yorkshire. He moved to London in the early 70s, then to Munich around 1976. He was one of the main architects of the Munich disco sound alongside electronic innovator Giorgio Moroder, and also released numerous, standout library records for legendary labels such as Bruton (with his brother Trevor), Impress, JW Music Library, and Munich’s own Sonoton label between the 70s and 2000s.

Bastow tragically passed away young, in Berlin, Germany, on March 16, 2007, at the age of 57. But he left an incredible legacy in electronic music that deserves far more recognition, and this reissue should bring it to many more ears. Let’s look at why…

The light, breezy opener, "The Rough With The Smooth," contains an awesome open drum break and is basically a blend of funk with piano, flute, and guitars. However, the first big highlight moment is "Beautiful People." Majestic, thoughtful, pastoral, and silken smooth, as the title suggests. It’s simply beautiful – a moving instrumental that needs to be heard to be believed. It’s been sampled by Knxwledge but by no one else, which is insane.

Slow-motion soul groover "Tumbleweed" is another absolute gem, ripe for a skilled MC to transform it. Laconic, lysergic funk with nostalgic undertones. The prominence of the guitar is evident, but the flute and glockenspiel carry it perfectly.

"Bits And Bats" is Blaxploitation-style street funk, enhanced by the clavinet, with a thumping bass and crunchy drums that, despite their toughness, manage to flirt with lightness. All in all, impressive brilliance with vibrant wah-wah.

Another big highlight comes with "A Change Of Pace," a detective funk jam with an insistent piano, soft drum machine, and hypnotic, melancholic flute lines. Honestly, we’d love to hear The Alchemist sample it. It even sounds like Bastow kept everything “pure” on this one.

Closing out Side A, the brilliant, upbeat bossa nova of "Janelle" completes a perfect run of six untouchable gems. As elegant as it is cheeky, it could have been part of the classic KPM greensleeve series, Piano Vibrations.

Side B kicks off with the Ramsey Lewis-inspired "Time And A Half." It’s a deceptively simple exercise in bass, drums, and piano, adorned with elegant percussion, great chord changes, and a dramatic bass solo.

"Supersplash" is a dramatic suite laden with distorted wah-wah guitars, electric piano, and glockenspiel. "Fillet Of Soul" offers a wah-wah driven funky shuffle, dynamic yet incredibly relaxed.

"Well Above Average" is exactly that: a classy guitar-driven soul instrumental that gets better with every listen. It includes some open drum breaks for listeners to delight in. The slow, thick funk of "The Clan," embellished with clavinet and vibraphone, is another monster that, again, has been sampled by Knxwledge. Finally, the chilled-out "Sing Song" closes everything out on a brilliant note, with its clavinet, electric piano, and glockenspiel creating an irresistible atmosphere.

As ever, the audio for Music To Varnish Owls By has been carefully remastered by regular Be With collaborator Simon Francis, ensuring it sounds better than ever. The expert skills of Cicely Balston ensured nothing was lost in the cut, whilst the records have been pressed to the highest possible standard at Record Industry, Holland. Featuring the eternal ‘Open Your Eyes’ - brilliantly sampled by J Dilla for Common’s ‘The Light’ - it is as essential as records get. Much like its self-titled predecessor, it has been out of print for far too long. To finally release the much-anticipated reissue is one of our proudest moments.

Whilst Ned Doheny is known in Japan as ‘Mr. California’, New Yorker Bobby Caldwell has always been ‘Mr. AOR’ to his friends in the Far East. His distinctive charm is an irresistible blend of soul, jazz, and pop influences. He possessed a phenomenal songwriting ability, smooth vocal delivery, was a great soul guitarist and deft keyboard player, and was known for his genius chord progressions. All of this added up to a multi-layered brilliance that entered the studio, and the singular sound he achieved was steeped in soulful strings and funky horns, lightly touching the record, whilst letting his smooth voice carry the impressive tracks he had created himself.

From the outset, it's easy to note that Cat In The Hat is a deeply special record. It is gorgeously produced and incredibly well-rounded, charting its own course with deep soul, warm jazz, and an impressive vocal delivery that truly helped Bobby reach new audiences at the time. Prepare for goosebumps with the funky piano power of ‘Coming Down From Love’, which opens the album with a track as good as anything Steely Dan or The Doobies ever created, with a heavenly vocal performance. The astounding ‘Wrong Or Right’ is an AOR hit that sits amongst the sleek, sophisticated grooves of the best Ned Doheny, whilst the cool, bouncy soul of ‘To Know What You’ve Got’ - a quintessential funky ballad - has elemental traces of ‘What A Fool Believes’. Closing out Side A, the folk-funk of ‘You Promised Me’ is a brilliant, soulful march with a wonderful vocal coda that just grows. Sensational.

The delicate bounce and self-harmonised falsettos of ‘It’s Over’ offer a truly delightful introduction to Side B, and serve as a great precursor for what follows. Bobby’s dynamic ‘Open Your Eyes’ is probably the reason everyone’s here. As if it needed it, the eternal J Dilla further immortalised Caldwell into the hip-hop canon with his production of Common’s ‘The Light’, which heavily samples the magical ‘Open Your Eyes’. In a tribute post to Bobby in March 2023, Questlove claimed he “found out brother Bobby loved it.” Bobby’s original has seen new life more recently at the hands of artists such as Dwele and Kendrick Lamar, and rightly so, as its insistent drums and staccato piano created a modern soul classic. You’d think that would be hard to top, right? Not when you’re Bobby Caldwell. Indeed, the horn-heavy ‘Mother Of Creation’ is absolutely genius and - whisper it - possibly the best track on the album, all funky piano and guitars with horn lines to die for. The exquisite ballad ‘I Don’t Want To Lose Your Love’ closes the album beautifully.

Sadly, Bobby passed away on March 23, 2023, after a long struggle with mitochondrial damage and oxidative stress, due to an adverse effect from a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. But a record this special deserves to be kept in circulation, and we think it deserves the Be With treatment.

No, Jay Richford and Gary Stevan are not particularly Italian-sounding names. As the story goes, these were the pseudonyms adopted by Stefano Torossi and Giancarlo Gazzani, who wrote the album but couldn't use their real names on the original release due to legal reasons. However, Stefano Torossi himself complicated and clarified the story all at once by explaining that Feelings was the work of four people, not just Gazzani and himself. Composers and musicians Sandro Brugnolini and Puccio Roelens also worked on the album, and as Torossi explained, “we all worked together,” splitting the royalties equally. That's the story. Okay, with that cleared up, let's get back to talking about the music. And what music.

Long considered a holy grail of library music, Feelings is the epitome of the kind of cinematic orchestral jazzy funk that defines “that 70s library music sound.” Insanely funky, delightfully melodic, and featuring impeccable and elegant production, this record is a showcase for a stunning set of compositions and arrangements, with performances that are simply virtuoso.

The first side of the record takes off with “Flying High,” bright and shimmering. Funk riffs, ominous strings, and trumpets with attitude combine in an icy groove that Isaac Hayes would surely have envied, before the steady-beat drums deliver a slow-motion knockout. The police-style string funk of “Going Home” ramps up the pace. All fast bass lines and a spectacular electric guitar solo. A real thriller.

“Walking In The Dark” oozes blaxploitation-style funk drama with strings and horns, all intertwined with delicate drums, velvety piano, and more raw wah-wah. “Fighting For Life” is another funk-fueled exercise, built around a relentless drum track that doesn't stop until even the stiffest neck starts moving.

The open, leisurely drum beat that guides the opening bars of the much-loved “Feeling Tense” would be enough on its own. But the heavy bass, soaring strings, and ominous brass that follow take things to the next level.

The second side opens with another favourite, “Running Fast,” and the track does exactly that. It’s an energetic chase theme, backed by a frantic (yet funky) Fender Rhodes, agile bass, and vibrant drums. Those enveloping strings are a superb addition. It’s a delightfully upbeat groove that speeds up the pulse.

“Loving Tenderly” wraps us in warm night-time vibes with easy-listening brass and seductive strings, ideal for nimble lovers. The pace picks up on the electrifying “Fearing Much,” where strings flutter around a deep bass, vibrant guitars, and another funky drum break. The lush, melancholic “Being Friendly” is another tranquil beauty, all warm Rhodes and strings. Majestic material that envelops you in a sonic embrace. The climax arrives with “Having Fun,” which rides on a pulsating bass and drum rhythm with patches of a funky guitar riff, luxurious keyboards, enveloping strings, and triumphant trumpets. Sensational.

Feelings is a deeply appropriate title for such an emotionally funky and genuinely soulful record. (Puma) Lewis’ much sought-after Shake It - Make It Loose album. Originally released on the infamous Metrovynil label in 1984, this record stands as the best and most authentic 80s boogie and funk album produced in Germany.

However, little is known about this legendary release, and credits are scarce and often confusing. In reality, Shake It - Make It Loose was a collaboration between only two musicians: John Davis (R.I.P., later one of the actual voices behind Milli Vanilli for producer Frank Farian) and Reginald Hudson (of Hudson People). Both were top-notch American musicians and songwriters, who spent much of their lives living and working in Southern Germany.

Hudson describes their creative process: “It was just Johnny and me, playing all instruments. Johnny handled the bass, guitar and vocals, and we programmed the drum machine together. Almost everything else was keyboards.” He recalls that they:

Recorded the album in just six or seven days at Hartmann Digital studio.
Includes two unreleased bonus tracks.
Deluxe gatefold presentation.
The combination of their musical talent and the cutting-edge technology at the studio resulted in a masterpiece of pure, modern funk and boogie. The album includes all the distinctive elements of great 80s music: fresh synthesizers, drum machines, and powerful lead vocals from John Davis. Upbeat tracks like “El Gato (Puma)” and the title track sit comfortably alongside more emotional numbers like “Tears” and “Hearts Of Gold,” while “Dance Shoes” remains one of the catchiest dance tunes of the era.

Even so, Shake It - Make It Loose holds a few mysteries. Why was it released under the unusual name J.D. (Puma) Lewis? And what’s the story behind tracks like “El Gato?” While J.D. Lewis stood for John Davis’ full legal name, Hudson explains the connection to “Puma”: “At the time, I was working as a promotion manager for the sports brand Puma. Jörg Dassler, son of Puma founder Rudolf Dassler, was a friend of mine, and he financed our studio sessions.” Said sessions took place at Hartmann Digital, a state-of-the-art studio in Untertrubach, Bavaria, where iconic artists such as Nena, Yello, Visage, DAF, and Soft Cell recorded.

Using such an expensive studio would have been unattainable for the two musicians without Puma’s backing, which also explains the title of “Dance Shoes.” When we licensed this track for the Boogie On The Mainline compilation in 2018, we had the opportunity to speak with John Davis (who sadly passed away in May 2021 due to COVID-19). Davis revealed that there were plans to make a video for the track in cooperation with Puma, but they never materialized. Ultimately, the album was signed by the Deggendorf-based Metrovynil label.

Interestingly, the original contract reveals that the album’s first version only contained six tracks. Metrovynil added two more: “Sexy Highschool Lady,” a track recorded solo by Davis, and “Party Rap” by The Dynamite Two, which had no connection to Davis or Hudson. The album credits also list a certain “Fred Fiore” as the person “who made all this possible.” Hudson, who considers himself to be the producer, has no idea who Fiore was, probably another label invention. “That’s just the kind of things Metrovynil did,” Hudson comments with some regret.

Despite the behind-the-scenes confusion, the music spoke for itself. The original issue looked and sounded fantastic, with an elegant cover depicting John Davis in a sharp suit. Now, with this first vinyl reissue, we are excited to include additional photos and more background information in a deluxe gatefold sleeve.

This reissue includes the six original tracks from the Hartmann Digital sessions, plus two additional tracks. From the original master tapes, we unearthed additional material that Hudson and Davis produced together in the early to mid-80s. We are excited to share the unreleased tracks “Life Is A Party” and “Let Me.” The digital version of the reissue will also include two more tracks: “Red Drops” and “Pick It Up Off The Ground.”

Shake It - Make It Loose is a classic boogie-funk album that belongs in every serious funk and disco collection. Bertrami was the motor behind Azymuth’s sound – a perfectionist and musical genius obsessed with the latest technology, which he wanted to use to push music to previously unexplored frontiers in Brazil. His keyboard playing has led to comparisons between Azymuth’s work and Herbie Hancock’s early 70s output; however, with its Brazilian swing, Azymuth’s electric jazz sound is unmistakably unique. Conti is an impulsive and extremely energetic drummer, as well as the trio’s authentic hardcore Carioca. Alex Malheiros, who learned his trade playing with Brazilian swing master Ed Lincoln, is respected in Brazil as one of the pioneers of the groove.

Bertrami first shot to fame as an arranger in the mid-60s, and by the end of that decade, he was arranging for Brazil’s queen of music, Elis Regina. This placed him in the big leagues, and by the early 70s, he was working as an arranger for the burgeoning TV soap opera scene. When not working, Bertrami would travel to New York to purchase the newest keyboards and synthesizers, ensuring he had the most cutting-edge range in Brazil. His work on TV soaps meant that he knew most of the Brazilian music industry’s A&R people. However, when he sent them the demos that would form the basis of this album in 1973, they did not share his vision; one label even went as far as to say that his music was ‘wrong.’

Released in the summer of 1975, the album was a moderate commercial success, selling 200,000 copies. The opening track, ‘Linha do Horizonte’ – a sublime piece of melancholic electronic saudade where deep cinematic synths meld with a gently strummed acoustic jazz guitar – was picked up for a TV soap opera and went on to sell half a million copies, boosting Azymuth onto the Brazilian music scene.

The rest of the album does not disappoint: the second track, ‘Melô dos dois bicudos,’ plugs Azymuth into Brazil’s national grid for a portion of electrified, psychedelic samba funk with crashing military drums, wailing sirens, and psychedelic synths. The third track, ‘Brazil,’ is a rolling bass-led groove, with a Bertrami melody lending it a naive, charming allure, while the fifth track, ‘Caça A Raposa,’ is a dancefloor jazz funk groove with Bertrami supplying a Flora Purim-esque vocal melody.

Azymuth went on to become one of the 80s’ best-selling jazz artists with their future albums for Milestone – indisputably the biggest jazz label of that decade. ‘Azimuth’ is the album that started it all for them, the record that laid down the foundations and defined their signature ‘samba doido’ (crazy samba) sound.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_7d92b2c4-1e59-473f-b747-e9b4594a93da.jpg?v=1736519770
dizzy-mandjeku-odemba-ok-allstars-odemba-nostalgie-rumba-congolaise-zephyrus-records
Dizzy Mandjeku & Odemba OK Allstars - Odemba Nostalgie - Congolese Rumba [Zephyrus Records]
Odemba Nostalgie - Rumba Congolaise by Dizzy Mandjeku & Odemba OK Allstars

180g vinyl.

Dizzy Mandjeku & Odemba OK Allstars, the renowned Congolese musical ensemble, enthusiastically announce the upcoming release of their latest masterpiece, "Odemba Nostalgie - Rumba Congolaise," on vinyl.

"Dizzy Mandjeku & Odemba OK Allstars bring pure Franco OK Jazz-style rumba to the stage: vibrant, funky, a soukous paradise, with the enduring sound of the 60s and 70s that gets everyone dancing and shouting with excitement." - Songlines (Anita Scott)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_3dad5a8b-322f-4441-9ec3-44b0eb1e75d0.jpg?v=1736520391
edmundo-arias-guepa-je-radio-martiko
Edmundo Arias - Guepa Je! During that era, tropical music from the Caribbean and Pacific coasts conquered the music scene in the interior of the country. One of the key figures of this period was Edmundo Arias. Along with Lucho Bermúdez and Pacho Galán, Arias is considered one of the "big three" composers of Colombian tropical music. He was an introverted person who avoided the spotlight at all costs, which made his work less known than that of his contemporaries. With this album, we hope to highlight the incredible legacy Edmundo Arias left us. Imagine large orchestras with elegantly dressed musicians playing the best cumbias, porros, and other tropical sounds in sophisticated ballrooms on a warm night in Medellín or Bogotá.

Edmundo Dante Arias Valencia was born in Tuluá, Valle del Cauca, on November 5, 1925. He came from a family of musicians. His father, Joaquín Arias Cardoza, was a bandleader and composer, and he taught his sons to play music. Arias learned to play many instruments, including guitar, bass, bandola (a pear-shaped string instrument related to the mandolin), tiple (12-string guitar), clarinet, and saxophone. He proved to be a very talented musician and, along with his father and older brother Ricaurte, formed the "Trío Arias." The family lived in various cities in Colombia, depending on where they found work. When his father died unexpectedly in 1948, Edmundo and Ricaurte had to support their family by working as musicians.

In 1951, Arias decided to move to Medellín, at that time the heart of the Colombian music industry and the city where the most important record companies and best musicians were located. It wasn't long before Arias made a name for himself as a musician, composer, arranger, and orchestra conductor for the most important labels of the time: Zeida, Ondina, Silver, and Sonolux. For the latter, he would eventually become artistic director. Over the years, he wrote hundreds of songs, recorded numerous albums with his own orchestras or with the Orquesta Sonolux, and collaborated with countless musicians, often uncredited.

Along with Lucho Bermúdez and Pacho Galán, Edmundo Arias is considered one of the "big three" composers of Colombian tropical music. But despite his renown, very little is known about his personal life. He was a humble man who preferred to work behind the scenes and avoided the spotlight at all costs. He rejected interviews and kept away from public life. At some live performances of the orchestra that bore his name, Arias would ask one of his musicians to pretend to be him so he wouldn't have to go on stage. You might think Arias was shy or antisocial, but that wasn't the case. Most people who worked with him describe him as jovial, good-humored, and someone who enjoyed working with others.

His invisibility in public life did not reflect how present he was behind the scenes. If he wasn't working on his own productions, he regularly collaborated with other musicians. Arias influenced the work of many of his colleagues and was a mentor to young artists. Some even say that in those days, all musicians in Medellín worked with Arias in one way or another. He had a strict work regimen: he composed, arranged, and recorded at night, while sleeping during the day. He was also very productive. It is said that on one occasion, he wrote arrangements for a 16-musician band in just a few minutes while the band was recording another song. His hard work and productivity resulted in hundreds of compositions and numerous albums bearing his name.

Edmundo Arias' career spanned over six decades, until his death on January 29, 1993. Throughout the years, he left us an enormous legacy. The songs on this album are a selection of his work during the 1950s and 60s. Many consider this period to be the highlight of his career. We chose the songs that we consider the most outstanding recordings from this period. The title of this compilation, *Guepa Je!*, is a colloquial Colombian expression often used in cumbia to express joy or celebration. Inspired by Turkish-style funk and an almost Mumbai-esque approach to soul, El Michels Affair offers us a different kind of drama and imagination with Yeti Season.

For those who have been following the band’s path, this album shouldn’t feel like a major departure from their sound. Already in 2018, the first single from Yeti Season revealed some of its proposition. A double-sided release that previewed the musical textures that dominate this record. The first track, “Unathi,” comes to life with the beautifully haunting yet hopeful voice of Piya Malik, formerly of 79.5. Singing in Hindi, Piya’s ethereal voice urges us to work and strive together for progress. Even if you don't understand the language, the urgency of the message is palpable, creating an immersive atmosphere that holds it all together.

Leon Michels explains that Piya was a vital influence on this album: “When Piya started singing in Hindi, her voice had a different tone. I knew we had to do something together.” Thus, Piya appears on three other songs on Yeti Season: “Zaharila,” “Murkit Gem,” and “Dhuaan,” each with a particular stamp within the album. “Zaharila” is a constantly evolving love song, marked by strident trumpets, forceful drums, and Piya’s lyrical plea. In contrast, the more energetic “Murkit Gem” opens with a distorted, Wu-Tang-esque bass line that drives Piya’s singing. The psychedelic guitar and the changing nuances of her voice, singing about an all-consuming love, have made “Dhuaan” the second single from Yeti Season.

Another vocal appearance on the record is that of Shannon Wise, from The Shacks, another artist on the Big Crown label. Her song, “Sha Na Na,” is more in line with EMA’s usual style: melodic, hypnotic, visually evocative. But between Shannon’s ethereal singing, the bouncy bass line, the melancholic vibes, and the dynamic drum lines, it sounds like the soundtrack to a thoughtful walk after a strangely dramatic night.

So, what is Yeti Season? It may be more of a feeling than a place or time of year. It’s an intense album, as evidenced by its characteristic musicality and the dramatic expressiveness of its vocals. But it is also a hopeful record, with phrasing, textures, and chord changes that hint at something better—or more complete—to come. This is felt in songs like “Ala Vida,” where pulsating, sharp chords serve as the foundation for EMA’s brilliant trumpet lines. Or in “Fazed Out,” which leaves a sense of determination, a drive towards resolution, even if its martial structure seems like the march of a conquering army.

That persistence surely comes from the fact that Leon Michels and his team finished this record during lockdown. It was a difficult and troubled period. Around the release of that record, he organized and participated in an online conversation called "Poesis" along with his friend and writer Teju Adeleye, historian Robin D.G. Kelley, and others. One of the most notable comments from that session was from poet and scholar Fred Moten, who described Gamedze's drumming as “an astounding interplay between turbulence and pulse. The pulse is supposed to regulate and be regular, but the turbulence under and over it is just extraordinary.” Moten added that this concept is a fundamental element of the percussive approach in Black music in general.

Turbulence and Pulse takes its title from this moment of synchronicity. Inspired by that description, Gamedze further developed the metaphor, expanding the concept of turbulence and pulse from a historical perspective. “Time in music is a metaphor for thinking about time in history and how it moves,” he says. “The way we are taught history usually takes away people's ability to imagine themselves as part of it and its development. It's something that just happens to us. I think there's a useful metaphor there, because the notion of time in music is created by musicians playing together. If we use that to think about history and time in history, we can see that history is actually created by people in many ways. Essentially, historical movement is generated by people organizing and acting together, whether for progressive or reactionary purposes.”

For Gamedze, the central message of Turbulence and Pulse is “to reclaim a form of historical agency and understand that the future is not predetermined. As people, we can organize to transform our world in small and large ways.” This concept stems from his involvement in radical cultural activism and political organizing. He adds, “One of the ideas I've had for a long time is to question the way people perceive culture as something static or fixed. In Africa there is a tension because of how colonizers have constructed visions of African culture; often there is talk of the need to preserve and document it. I think that is important, but it is also necessary to understand that these things are in constant motion. And it is up to us to participate in that movement.”

For the album cover, Gamedze extends the visual aesthetic of his previous release with a handmade illustration. “I feel like my drawings represent the inside of my mind. They are very free and improvisational,” he says. The music that comprises Step on Step was created by Stepney alone, in the basement of his South Side Chicago home, sometime in the late 1960s and early 1970s, before his premature death in 1976.

Born and raised in Chicago, Stepney was an arranger, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and composer known for his work with Earth, Wind & Fire, Deniece Williams, and Ramsey Lewis, as well as being a staff producer at Chess Records in the 1960s, where he was an essential creative force behind seminal recordings by Rotary Connection, Minnie Riperton, Marlena Shaw, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Terry Callier, The Dells, The Emotions, among others. In the decades following his passing, the presence of his name in the credits and on vinyl labels has become a mark of quality for record collectors, music historians, and aficionados, while his sound has been sampled by countless hip-hop artists, including Kanye West, A Tribe Called Quest, The Fugees, MF Doom, and Madlib. But compared to the posthumous fame of his sound, or the music he created and the artists he supported while alive, Stepney remains a massively underrated figure… a genius relegated to the shadows.

One of the distinctive elements of his "baroque soul" sound is the epic, expansive expression of his horn and string arrangements (in many cases brought to life by members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra), as heard on Minnie Riperton's Les Fleurs, Marlena Shaw's California Soul, or Terry Callier's What Color Is Love. This makes it all the more special that his de facto debut album Step on Step, seeing its first widespread release nearly five decades after his death, is a collection of stripped-down 4-track tape recordings that show Stepney, alone, playing all the instruments with minimal resources. It is, as Chicago culture historian (and author of the Step on Step liner notes) Ayana Contreras says, "the funk unadulterated," an unprecedented representation of an inspired composer imagining and conceiving music (some of which would eventually become major studio productions) in its primal state.

Step on Step features 23 tracks, most of which are original compositions by Stepney that were never again recorded by him or any other artist. It also includes prototypical demos of Stepney compositions for Earth, Wind & Fire, such as That’s The Way of The World, Imagination, and On Your Face, as well as the original version of Black Gold, which would eventually be recorded by Rotary Connection (as I Am The Black Gold of The Sun, with lyrics by Richard Rudolph). And in addition to the wordless chants of the original and Stepney's first single Daddy’s Diddies, Stepney’s actual voice is heard a couple of times throughout the album, testing mics and inputs on his tape recorder.

All previously unrecorded and unnamed original compositions contained in Step on Step were titled by Stepney’s daughters, Eibur, Charlene, and Chanté Stepney, whose voices are also heard throughout the album, telling stories and sharing memories about their father. The Stepney Sisters, who produced this album over many years, have been committed to efforts to celebrate their father's legacy and put his work in a brighter light. They treasured the tapes left by their father in the basement of their home, transferring the audio on several occasions and originally compiling the recordings for an ultra-limited edition CD under their own DIY label (The Charles Stepney Masters) in the early 2010s. “We were always talking about how we were trying to develop it and we’d get to different people and they’d say ‘what is this raw stuff?’… It was just the first level of something that would become really great,” says Chanté. “To have this intimate view of an artist’s process is truly unheard of and unheard… so I really appreciate the opportunity to give this. I’m so happy for my dad that we get to share this with the world in this way, with this level of respect.”

This new double-LP collection on International Anthem represents "a genuine, beautiful, deeply emotional, and personal effort by three women to reconnect with their father and validate their own memories of his passion and brilliance," says Scott McNiece, co-founder of the label. By the time she recorded the music included in this collection, she was already a prolific and in-demand session musician and arranger on the West Coast, participating in over 80 recordings by other artists. She joined the Elektra / Asylum roster in 1978, when the label was launching a pop and jazz division alongside visionaries such as Donald Byrd and Grover Washington, Jr. “The idea was to create music suitable for commercial radio and R&B,” Patrice explains. “We were all essentially making sophisticated dance music.”

Backed by some of Los Angeles’ most prominent musicians, such as saxophonist Gerald Albright, drummer “Ndugu” Chancler and bassist Freddie Washington, and with an open mind thanks to her background in classical music, jazz and soundtrack composition, Patrice’s musical proposal differed in its complexity from many soul artists of the time. “Musicians in Los Angeles were not as tied to tradition,” she comments. “None of us were accustomed to limitation and the record label let us go our own way.”

Early tracks like Music Of The Earth and Let’s Sing A Song Of Love were among her first forays as a lead vocalist, before she released her 1979 album Pizzazz, which included the unmistakable disco sound of Haven’t You Heard and one of her best ballads, Settle For My Love. “Ballads make you feel more vulnerable as an artist because they are often personal, but I think listeners identify with that sincerity,” she reflects. By then, Patrice’s records were meticulously arranged and produced, reflecting her growth as a songwriter, producer, arranger and performer. The dance anthem Never Gonna Give You Up and the 1980 album Posh paved the way for her masterpiece, Straight From The Heart, released two years later.

Lacking support from her record label, Patrice and her production team personally financed the promotional campaign for her first single, Forget Me Nots.
